''V'' : A freedom fighter or a terrorist?

In the novel V for Vendetta by Alan Moore, the major character is ‘’V’’. Throughout the novel ‘’V’’ is considered as an order and life threatening agent by the government. This is the basis of the dilemma of whether V’s actions are hazardous or they have the very best interest at his heart.

The standpoint from this dilemma can be thoroughly analyzed is the idea that it’s necessary to detach V himself from his actions. What triggers that V decides to take the bull by the horns and take law into his own hands is the attempt to avoid self-judgment. That’s why he also decides to wear a mask, to separate his behavior from himself. He certainly decides to disguise himself so he can give harsh judgment a wide berth.

Additionally, It’s also possible to argue that what whips up V’s actions is his attempt to battle the fake propaganda broadcasted by the government to cover what really happens. For instance, when he bombs the parliament house the government covers up the attack. What’s more, the media even dare to make fun out of the tragic situation, so citizen easily get their eyes off the ball. On the top of that, it sneakily get armed and covertly go to war. Up to a certain point, we can compare this attack to the spate of terrorist attacks the U.S. have undergone. In stark contrast, the government of the U.S did not make fun out of the situation. The president delivered speech giving detailed information about the tragic event. That’s what V would have rejoiced at!!!

The bottom line is that in the novel V’s actions are revolutionary, ground-breaking, well-orchestrated and brilliant, but were V to be from real life, his actions would be stormy, fear-inducing and sinister.

What do you think? Are V’s actions justified? why? Would you support him?

  1. First of all, I found pretty interesting the deep analysis that you have carefully provided. It really made me think. Secondly, I strongly believe that answering your question would be a never ending discussion depending on the point of view you may tackle this problematic situation.
Hurting people has never been socially accepted even though if there is a strong ideal behind it. Everytime there is a controversial fight that may have implications in the wellbeing of the population, there is a constant attempt to not harm inhabitants. Well, that is what common sense will tell you to do, but that could be also critized.
In the case of the graphic novel, there was a need of a groundbbraking event that would make destroy the cornerstone of society's structure as to make it change. That could be a fact. Now what it is discussed, is what characteristic this event would have, would it be harmful or just peaceful?
Every revolutionary event that has stricken the world has needed a triggering moment as to achieve a goal. And I would answer what you have pointed out with another question, el fin justifica los medios?

  2. As I said in my post, I think that we as readers support V because (a) he is a fictional character and (b) because living in a democratic country we expect to be able to do whatever we want to however, V is a terrorist and a murder and in real life that kind of actions should not be allowed even though we can sympathise with his point of view. As an example I will write what I read in an article: “Does V's beliefs truly justify such terror, or do we believe that only because we agree his beliefs? To put it another way: would you accept V's actions if you removed his mask and found the face of Osama bin Laden underneath?” I do not think so.

  3. Hi girls, well, this post also called my attention because I talked about something similar in one of my posts, actually I stated the same analogy whether V is part of the good side, or part of the bad guys, and I actually I don’t know if that questions can be answered. I agree with Macarena when she says that it would be a never ending discussion trying to answer that question because it depends on people’s values, beliefs, ideologies, etc.
From my point of view V started in the story as a justifier, I agree with most of his points, but in the way of his vendetta he started turning into a terrorist definitely, I mean, nothing can justify murdering people. And that is why I think that V lost the point, he had a taste of power and he took the possibly of also imposing his belief through the violence, so in technical words he is a terrorist, now the reasons why he became such a person, are completely justified, not his actions.
