EXPRESS YOURSELF, DON'T REPRESS YOURSELF

From time to time, certain women appear and speak more or louder than what people might want to hear or tolerate. Even nowadays, when our society seems more evolved and modern, still certain people can't bear a strong woman's voice.

In Pride and Prejudice, we can see some strong women with strong voices. However, they're all obligated to not express themselves as they would want, because of the circumstances and the time they were living.
and even some characters that we might not like or agree with, have strong voices for a woman at that time, such as Lady Catherine. She's a bitter lady, but still quite decided and with a strong voice. She known how to express herself in order to achieve her goals.
And, on the other side, we have Lizzy. She' not afraid to say what's on her mind, even if that might be considered offensive or inadequate.

Society has evolved. However, there's still fear when a strong woman with a strong voice appears on the scene.
In 1993, Madonna released her SEX book which featured nude pictures of her, friends and models, in sexual situations or fantasies. Even being the queen of pop, she was highly criticized for expressing herself in that way. She was aloud to be strong, but not in that way. The world was scared once again in front of a strong female voice. In 1994, her single Human Nature was released, as way of response to those who felt so offended by her sexuality.
And she claimed: "Would it sound better if I were a man?"

So, are we still living in a phallus-centric world?

  1. From one hardcore Madonna fan to another, thank you for this post.
I think that the lyrics of Human Nature depict some aspects of Lizzy´s personality.
"And I´m not sorry, it´s human nature" that lyric ,to me. sums up the argument of Lizzy against Lady Catherine. Just like Madonna´s unapolegetic view of what she has done, Lizzy decided not to give in to Lady Catherine´s preassure, she decided not to apologize for what she felt, she decided to stay true to herself, to her "nature"
If I were Lizzy, I would have quoted this song to answer to Lady Catherine´s preassure " I´m not your b¡itch, don´t hang you $h¡t on me ¡"

  2. Unfortunately I think we're still living in a man's world even if women have taken more control over their lives. Let me exemplify this by saying that once I heard on the bus a man talking by the phone and he was telling a story about his job. He said that his boss was a woman and that he was so angry because of that. Therefore, he would not do the things that she asked him, because of the simple reason that he could not imagine being dominated by a woman in his job. Moreover, I have realized that women do the same. I mean when a woman see another one who is capable of doing different things they feel jeolous and do not respect them .. So, I wonder myself if we as women do not respect our gender how men are going to do so?
