V for Vendetta is a story of a man who seeks
for revenge and desires to change a society dominated by a dictatorship that
uses different means to control people that make no effort to break free. Yet, we
need to recognize that V is a terrorist; he murders people and torture them
physically and psychologically. Moreover, he brainwashed Evey until she sees
his point of view. Is it surprising that we like him and support him? Maybe not;
people looks for freedom, we always proclaim that we live in a democratic
society and we want the right to do whatever we want. But I think that the main
reason we have for supporting V is that he is a fictional character and the story
is not real.
Nevertheless,
we can see that some aspects of the novel have become part of our own reality. For
example, V for Vendetta predicted the use of Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras
on city streets, which tells us that we are a society that lives under the
surveillance of the governments, something which is proper of dystopian novels.
V for Vendetta also seemed to anticipate the
internet-based opposition of groups such as Anonymous as agents of protest. The
so-called “hackers” cause mostly harmless chaos around the internet while take
V’s mask as a symbol of radical transparency online.
Finally, and as I said before, in the graphic novel, people is oppressed by a violent government that does not mind to hurt their own people in order to keep the power. We cannot deny that many governments do the same, in fiction or reality power is always the main cause of human misery. And V for Vendetta seems to have predicted the future we live in now.
